MAP VI:  The major diplomatic coup of the 20th Century was the Nixon-Kissinger inspired rapprochement with China. It is interesting to note that at this time Mao and his foreign minister Zhou Enlai believed that the Soviet Union was winning the ‘Cold War’ in Asia and wished to encourage the Americans to continue the battle for Indochina. For America and the West, the change to the geopolitical map was immensely important for the future security and stability of the region while opening the path for the eventual incorporation of China into the global free market economic system.
