MAP II:  The Allied Powers were not as sanguine about post-war Asia as this map might suggest. There were powerful communist insurrections in Malaysia, Burma, Vietnam and the Philippines. In Manchuria Mao’s communists and Stalin moved rapidly to fill the vaacuum left by the defeat of the Japanese. Furthermore there were strong communist parties or underground movements in Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. Nevertheless in 1945, the USA could have had no reason to believe that her domination of Asia would be seriously challenged in the post-war world.
